Dear Donor Family,
I am writing to thank you for the organ donation from your loved one. I am very sorry for your loss, and I want you to know that your gift has given me a chance to live a normal, productive life. It has taken me six years to write you, but not because I wasn’t grateful. At the time, I was told that they did not have a program in place to be able to reach out to the family of my donor. I just found out recently, that they did implement a program and was excited to make contact, so that you would know that, life for me is so very special because of your gift.
I needed a transplant because I was diagnosed with PBC, a liver disease that affected my immune system, leading my immune system to believe that my liver was foreign and begin to attack my own Liver. There is no cure, making a donated organ my only option. My mother, too, was diagnosed with the same disease.
Since the transplant, I was able to see my daughter marry and was fortunate to see my first and only granddaughter, Stella grow up. She’s five and the apple of my eye. You and your loved one made all that possible for me.
For this, I am very grateful to you and your loved one. My family and I will always remember your act of kindness and generosity. I will cherish my gift for the rest of my life. Every day I open my eyes, I also thank you and yours for that opportunity.
