Dear Donor Family,

This letter seems almost impossible to write because the words “thank you” just aren’t powerful enough. So first, THANK YOU. I hope that this letter can convey our gratitude, appreciation and sympathy to you and your family.

My husband received your son’s liver. The moment we heard, our lives changed forever.

While I was so hopeful after so many years of waiting and caring for my husband and watching his health decline, I was completely devastated to learn about your son. You see, my husband and I are new parents to our 15-month-old son, Knox. Please know that in addition to our gratitude to your family, we also grieved your son.

As a parent, I cannot imagine what you have been through. In addition to our family and friends praying and thinking about my family, they were also praying for yours.

Dear Donor Family –

As I sit down to write this letter, my curious one-and-half year old son is playing at my feet. I get to witness him diligently take everything out of my bottom drawer of my desk and then look up at me and say “all gone”. After he’s done, he run’s into the other room in excitement. It is, after all, bath time and he loves “swemmeeing” in the bathtub. Although when his mother, my wife, goes to grab him to take him downstairs to his nightly routine, he immediately runs away and giggles. Hi, my name is MM. It’s been a year and two months since I received my liver transplant, and it’s taken me a while to recuperate from the operation. Therefore, I would like to take the time to show my gratitude to the KIND-HEARTED family who donated my life saving liver.

Due to my condition, my life was between life and death. I was almost about to leave behind my two boys and my new born daughter who was at risk of not making it either, and the one who also stood by me through this hard time my husband and had faith in GOD that someone our there was generous enough to donate what saved my life the liver.

Dear Donor Family,

I am writing to tell you how sorry I am for your loss and I want you to know that your gift has given me a chance to live a normal, productive life.

I needed a transplant because I had liver disease from a transfusion that I received in 1960. The transfusion caused Hepatitis C, which led to liver disease/cancer.

I received the transplant last month. The surgery was early in the morning. I am so grateful to your family for giving me the chance to continue my life. I have 3 kids. One was just married in December and will be graduating college in June. The other 2 are recent college grads as well. I look forward to sharing these times with my children. Thank you does not touch the appreciation for the gift I received. How does one say thank you yet I’m so sorry for your loss in one sentence. Such an unselfish act to be a donor. His gift lives in me and I hold it in awe.

I acquired Hepatits C from a blood transfusion in 1978 before donor blood was tested, and it was pooled together. I lived with it, became a nurse had three children. None of them were infected and I’m married now for 37 yrs. I was dying. My children, grandchildren as well as my husband, were witnessing this at UCSF…Then the gift came…right when my body needed it to survive…How does one say thank you?

Dear Donor Family,

On behalf of my entire family, I am writing to thank you for the organ donation from your loved one. Words alone cannot express my emotions upon receiving this kidney transplant because it has allowed me to begin again and have a chance to live a normal, productive life. I know that this gift comes at a great cost and tragedy to you and your loved one, but I hope that my gratitude and condolences can offer some peace in the healing process.

Before the transplant, I had kidney failure and had gone through ten years of dialysis. While this became a more manageable treatment towards the end, I led a restrictive lifestyle and was frequently tired.

Dear Donor Family,

I have been having trouble on how to write this letter of appreciation. My kidney transplant is the most monumental thing to happen to me. It has left me overwhelmed at times I have felt at least 50 levels of joy and appreciation. I also feel a Profound Sadness and a sense of suffering and loss.

Before my transplant I had missed my nephews wedding. My husband who I have been married to for 35 years loved to travel and long drives in the rain, and sometimes stayed out for days. All of this came to a stop when I lost my kidney. It seems my whole life became so small I was so sick every other day…
