Dear Donor Family,

I’m writing this letter to express my sincerest gratitude for the gift of life that your loved one granted me. I am truly sorry for your family in this time of loss. Please know that the donation has provided my family a renewed faith in human compassion.

The gift of life given me has allowed me and my family to continue in pursuit of my chosen life-path. I am an honorably discharged U.S. Marine veteran, Viet Nam era. I have since that time worked in a factory, retiring after 23 years and then returning to school to become a registered alcohol and drug abuse counselor. Dear Donor Family,

I am writing because my family and I are so grateful for the donation of a liver from your loved one. I am so sorry for your loss. I want you to know that, even though it took me a while to write, I have been thinking of you and your loved one every day. I had some major complications from the transplant surgery, but the liver has been working great all along. Little by little, I am getting stronger and that is thanks to your loved one.

Dear Donor Family, I am writing to express my thank you for my organ donation from your loved one. It has been very hard to get this letter to you, as my mother, sister, and myself now, have all had kidney transplants.

I am a very fortunate person, as all is going extremely well. We were a perfect match. My two grandchildren 6 and 3 say, “Hey Noni, hows that perfect kidney?” I cry every time. Thank you for your loved one, to be so considerate, to think of others.

Dear Donor Family, On behalf of myself and my entire family, I would like to take this opportunity to offer my thanks to you, but most importantly to your loved one who donated the liver. Dear Donor Family,

I’m writing to you to both give you my condolences for your loss, and to express my sincere appreciation for the liver I received. This liver has given me a chance to live a normal life again.

I had been on the transplant list for 3 years with end stage liver disease. I was told my liver was shot at 35 and my doctors and I had no idea what caused it. Having been given a possible death sentence was difficult.

As of this writing, I am still in the hospital a week after the transplant and they say I’m doing good.

I cannot thank you and your lost loved one enough for this donation and neither can my family. Your loved one’s donation is the best thing I’ve ever received, and I will cherish it for the rest of my life.

My dear Donor Family,

I am so sorry for your recent bereavement. The loss of a son, father, brother, husband, and grandfather in the prime of life is so very hard to bear. I empathize with you in your pain and sorrow. But what a truly wonderful gift he left as his living legacy towards us organ transplant recipients. I will never forget the date of my transplant as my re-birthday. I was sitting at lunch with my caregiver, who just flown in the night before, when I got a call from one of the UCSF transplant coordinators, asking if I could be a back-up recipient, I immediately said “yes,” since I felt a special tingle at mass that morning, hinting that something special would happen that day. I have been married for 36 years and we have 4 children, 5 grandchildren and one more due in April this year.

I have been fighting liver and kidney disease since 2004 when it was first diagnosed. In the last 3 years I have been especially sick and getting weaker.
