“Because of you, I can be there for my family”

Dear Donor Family,

On the date of my transplant my second life began as I was given the gift of life by your families loss. My new liver has changed my life. Your family has saved my life and because of you, I can be there for my family. Your love and compassion for the human life has provided me with a new, healthy liver that I am honoring each day of my life by taking care of my body and honoring your son with every breath I take. Because of your amazing generosity of donor life, I am alive today with my family. I cannot imagine the pain of your loss, but I wanted you to know that your son’s gift to my family will always be nurtured, treasured and adored forever. The gift you have given me for a second life has literally altered my being, faith and drive for life in more ways than I can say. I promise you that I will always take care of your son’s gift of life to me.

Throughout the process of getting on the liver transplant list, hearing there may be a liver available and then not being a match, my faith was tested in ways I can not describe. When we received the call, it was bittersweet. My wife, two daughters, son and grandchildren were heart broken for your family, but in debt to your family all in the same as it meant I could live another day. We cannot imagine your grief, struggle and heartache, but hope you have a little breath of fresh air knowing that I actually get to be a husband and father because of your sons life.

Now I play, workout, have a healthy life style and treasure those quiet moments in which I honor your son and his family.

Before my transplant, I was a hyper and loud man. From the moment I woke, I felt a serenity through my body. My patience is far greater, my health is amazing, and I listen. I know my liver is not my own, and perhaps this is God’s way of teaching me whom your son was. The overwhelming feeling my wife, children and grandchildren and I get when discussing the amazing gift you have given me is showing our human life that real miracles can happen. Our prayers each day reflect upon your giving and humble nature our gratitude to you.

When on a drive or actually running around with my grandchildren, I reflect on the gift of life I have been given. I was so sick and overweight before, I watched from the sidelines. Now I play, workout, have a healthy life style and treasure those quiet moments in which I honor your son and his family. Each day I’m blessed to be alive and it is all due to your son. Thank you.

I don’t know if we will ever meet, but I would travel to the end of the earth to meet your family. I don’t know what I would say or what would happen, but I would like to be in the presence of angels and I know that I will honor you all the days of my life. I would like to thank you for giving me life, my new life is amazing because of your family. I can not fathom the loss and grief, but I do hope that you know that with the pain, you know your son’s liver is alive and changing lives one day at a time. With the help of your son’s honor, I am telling everyone I know about transplants and donors. I hope I will always honor and make you proud and that your son’s will know his honor will live on.

Blessings to your family and God Bless you.
